5 DIY Tips for a Younger-Looking Smile
September 11, 2017
Over the years, you expect for your appearance to change as wrinkles and fine lines develop while a few gray hairs begin to show the passing of time. However, your teeth can also show your age. Thankfully, you can help to turn back the clock to keep your smile looking younger with simple do-it-yourself tips that you can use right at home.
1. Skip Sugar
Not only is sugar bad for your waistline, but your teeth as well. As you age, you will likely deal with dry mouth due to the use of certain medications, like those that are used to control your blood pressure. This decreases your saliva production. As a result, you have an increased risk for developing tooth decay and oral infections.
When you consume sugary foods or drinks wile dealing with dry mouth, it cannot properly cleanse itself from the reduced saliva, further raising your risk for dental complications. To help encourage more moisture, the NIH recommends that you chew sugarless gum while also drinking plenty of water.
2. Prevent Stains
Your teeth will naturally become darker as you age. It is unavoidable. However, if you consume darkly pigmented or acidic foods and drinks, use tobacco, or do not practice proper oral hygiene, stains will develop quicker, causing you to appear older. To keep your smile bright, avoid stain-causing factors, like smoking, coffee, and berries. If you cannot skip your morning cup of coffee, brush your teeth immediately afterwards.
To help reduce the appearance of surface stains, there are many over-the-counter whitening products you can use. However, if you want more noticeable results, it is best to see your cosmetic dentist for a professional treatment.
3. Brush and Floss Daily
To prevent oral health issues and to keep your smile looking younger, it is best to brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove harmful food partials and plaque buildup. Do not forget to floss your teeth each night before going to bed.
4. Snack Healthy
Snacking on unhealthy foods, like chips, will cause bacteria to build in the mouth, eating away at your enamel. If you need a little something extra in between meals, choose healthier alternatives, like low-fat cheese, celery sticks, or apple slices.
5. Visit Your Dentist
It is recommended that you visit your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. This helps to remove plaque and tartar accumulations that not only damage your teeth, but hurt the appearance of your smile. In addition, you will help to prevent oral health complications, like tooth decay.
