Helpful Tips for Keeping Your Child’s Mouth in Tiptop Shape
January 4, 2023
The American Dental Association, one of the most renowned dental organizations around, has deemed February as Children’s Dental Health Month—which means that now is the time to ensure that your little one’s smile is in the best shape imaginable! Here are a few tips from your pediatric dentist that’ll ensure your child’s teeth and gums are healthy and beautiful moving forward; this will help set them up for a healthy life.
Tip #1: Encourage Good Brushing Habits
Like you, your child should be brushing twice a day for two minutes each time. Children ages 2 – 6 should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. If your child is young, be sure that you’re supervising them so that they’re brushing properly and aren’t swallowing any toothpaste. Also be sure that you’re replacing their brush every 3 to 4 months.
Tip #2: Promote a Healthy Diet
Be sure that your child is snacking healthy and eating hearty, nutrient-rich meals. Starchy and sugary items alike pose a threat to your child’s teeth; fortunately, there are all kinds of healthy alternatives that your little one will still love. Provide options such as low-fat cheeses and yogurts when you’re able to; however, if you have to resort to something sweet like candy, a chocolate bar is preferable to gummy or sticky sweets that can get lodged between teeth, even after brushing!
Tip #3: Keep Them Hydrated
Water is the absolute best beverage for maintaining a healthy smile—and it isn’t even close! Sugary and acidic drinks can wreak havoc on enamel, so if your child is constantly drinking sodas or juices, they’re at a much higher risk of tooth decay and cavities. Water helps to rinse away any sugar or particles that can lead to cavities. Many municipal water sources also contain fluoride, which is integral in the fight against tooth decay.
Tip #4: Schedule Preventive Dental Care
Of course, it’s always best to ensure that you and your child alike are visiting your dentist regularly for routine dental care. This allows your child’s dentist to clean their teeth at a thorough level and ensure that there aren’t any underlying issues threatening their overall oral health. It’s worth noting that the American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommends that parents establish a dental home for their child by their first tooth or first birthday—whichever comes first.
By following these tips, you can easily ensure that your little one’s smile is in optimal health and looks its best; and your child will thank you by smiling brightly and often!
