4 Tips to Help You Keep Your Smile Bright All October Long
October 1, 2023
October is here, which means Halloween is right around the corner—and you’re probably feeling pretty excited to celebrate the spooky season this year! But you shouldn’t spend all thirty-one days this month with solely candy, costumes, and scary movies in mind; you shouldn’t also keep tabs on your oral hygiene! In honor of Dental Hygiene Month this October, here are some must-know tips from your dentist that are certain to help you maintain a bright and healthy set of pearly whites all month long—and beyond!
Tip #1. Consistent Oral Hygiene Is Key
You’ve probably been told your whole life that you should brush your teeth twice a day—and there’s a good reason for this! Daily oral hygiene at home is the secret to a healthy and bright smile, regardless of what month it is. That said, don’t let October be the month you fall behind! Be sure you’re brushing, flossing, and supplementing with an antibacterial mouth rinse at home—especially after a night filled with trick-or-treating and spooky festivities!
Tip #2. Watch What You Eat
It’s not always easy to make sensible dietary choices during October, especially with all the Halloween candy that’s being given out. But you should strive to limit how much candy you’re consuming; moderation is key! Consider enjoying your candy with a meal, so you’re less likely to eat as much. Avoid snacking on candy continuously throughout the day. And when possible, swap out a sugary sweet for a healthier option, like a piece of fruit or a hearty, fresh vegetable. And as always, be sure you’re drinking plenty of water to wash things down—it’s the best beverage for your oral health by far!
Tip #3. Avoid Scary Oral Habits
Diet and hygiene aren’t the only things you should keep in mind this month—you should also steer clear of bad oral habits that can prove detrimental to one’s smile. There are few things scarier than oral cancer, and it’s often caused by smoking cigarettes and using tobacco products. Chipped, cracked, and broken teeth can also be frightening, especially if they’re the result of using your teeth as tools or biting into hard objects like ice cubes. Do yourself a favor this month and refrain from doing anything that might damage your teeth and gums.
Tip #4. Pay Your Dentist a Visit
Your dentist probably isn’t expecting any trick-or-treaters at their office, but you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with them this month, especially if it’s been a while since your last checkup! These visits allow your provider to inspect your mouth for any worrisome signs, as well as clean your mouth at a detailed level you cannot do yourself. That way, your smile won’t be scary—but the rest of your costume will be!
