3 Tips to Avoiding an Emergency Overseas
August 10, 2024
If you travel frequently for work, especially overseas, then you probably already know how to pack lightly, navigate airports, and overcome jetlag. But do you know how to handle a dental emergency?
You never know when you might have a sudden toothache or other issue that requires immediate attention, so it pays to be prepared. With that in mind, keep reading to learn three tips that can help you get the right help if you ever find yourself in an urgent oral situation.
Tip #1: Practice Prevention
Although you cannot anticipate when you’ll run into an unexpected problem, thankfully, there are things you can do to prevent it! One of the best ways to safeguard your smile is by maintaining it regularly so it’s less prone to tooth decay, gum disease, and injuries. Brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily removes plaque and bacteria buildup to keep maladies at bay.
However, it’s also essential to visit your dentist every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning. This allows them to monitor your dental condition to catch and address any areas of concern before they progress. For example, fluoride treatment can prevent a cavity if they spot weakening enamel. If you know you’re going to be away from home for a while, why not make an appointment before you go?
Tip #2: Make a Plan
When you’re in the middle of a dental emergency, time is of the essence. Dental issues usually don’t resolve themselves, and waiting to be seen can result in more complex and costly procedures. Unfortunately, finding the right help can be hard when you’re in unfamiliar territory, especially if you don’t speak the local language.
You can circumvent potential issues by researching dentists in the area before you arrive. You can also contact your insurance provider to see if they offer overseas coverage or plans. That way, you’ll be prepared to act quickly should the worst come to pass.
Tip #3: Pack the Essentials
Putting together a dental care kit to keep in your carry-on ensures that you’ll have any supplies you might need if something happens. It’s easy to find travel-sized toothbrushes, floss, and containers of toothpaste that can easily be tucked into your luggage. You might also want to include a bottle of water, a cold compress, and over-the-counter meds like Tylenol or ibuprofen to be able to rinse out your mouth and address aches and inflammations that might occur.
Hopefully, you don’t run into any issues, but now you’ll be ready if you do!
